There is still the sun, the Nordic skiing valley and a beautiful crowd for Ziano di Fiemme, which concluded even this edition of the Roller Ski World Cup.
The men’s 15 km mass start in free technique delivered a spectacular finale for the World Cup, with Matteo Tanel and Raimo Vigants in the lead, the latter with 6 points in favour of the Italian. The race, as often happens in this format in the men’s race, was decided in the final part. There has also been a yellow card for Vigants who broke Tanel’s pole. Vigants then took the lead, in the last part on the uphill before the finish line, with Tanel and Austria’s Brandner behind him. Vigants pulled away in the sprint, but Tanel managed to finish second ahead of Brandner, losing only five points to the Latvian and winning the overall standing by one point!
Sweden dominated the women's race. The first selection took place after the second lap when Anna Maria Ghiddi and Maria Eugenia Boccardi were in the first positions of the leading group, together with Ebba Stenman, already winner of the World Cup, and the multiple-times champion Linn Sömskar, whose first victory in the World Cup dates back to 2014 in Val di Fiemme.
The latter started to push hard at the end of the 5th lap, which was a bit of a dress rehearsal for what would happen a few minutes later. The final lap began with Ghiddi, Boccardi, Sömskar and Stenman together. The four battled it out on equal terms until the very last metre. In the end, however, the Swedish team's great teamwork prevailed, with an overwhelming Sömskar always in front and Stenman satisfied with the Cup over Boccardi and Ghiddi.
Among juniors, Ville Jutterdal (SWE) had an outstanding competition, justifying the victory in the overall ranking and in the 10km in free technique. The competition was characterised by the use of tactics, broken only in the last lap when Jutterdal pulled off an impressive action on the sloping ground before the finish line. He left behind his competitors and sprinted towards the podium, winning ahead of Italy’s Epis (2nd) and Switzerland’s Krayenbuehl (3rd).
Johanna Holmberg (SWE) won the women’s junior race, confirming her as the strongest. She managed the race as she pleased, demonstrating also great maturity. In the third lap, the winner of the junior overall ranking decided to start her progression and literally ‘broke’ the leading group, remaining alone at the top in the company of Sofia Shkatula (UKR).
In the final lap, Holmberg launched her final attack and broke away from her Ukrainian travelling companion. The highly rated Emilie Ruud Lia, instead, won the sprint for third place (NOR).
The men’s World Cup went to Matteo Tanel, while the sprint one went to Emanuele Becchis. On the women’s side, instead, Ebba Stenman won both of them.
Sweden reigns even among juniors: the overall standing was won by Sweden’s Johanna Holmberg and Ville Jutterdal, while Emilie Ruud Lia (NOR) and Ville Jutterdal (SWE) won the women's and men's sprint rankings, respectively, with Sweden coming out on top as the best nation.
