One last dance at the FIS Nordic Summer Festival in Val di Fiemme: the men’s Super Team of Ski Jumping concluded the international top event in Trentino, valid as Olympic Test Event, with the victory of Poland’s Kamil Stoch and Dawid Kubacki, ahead of Japan, 2nd thanks to an incredible Ryoyu Kobayashi with Ren Nikaido. Slovenia of Domen Prevc and Anze Lanisek ended up 3rd.
The Super Team is one of the most engaging formats of Ski Jumping, where teams composed of pairs of fellow countrymen face the first jumps, one for each athlete. After the first round, the best 12 teams are selected to participate in the 2nd round, and then, the best 8 will battle in the final round. This evening, amid the applause of the crowd and general Olympic enthusiasm, Romania, Kazakhstan and Canada failed to make it through the first round, while China, Ukraine and the United States were disqualified. While Poland, Japan and Slovenia took turns at the top of the rankings, the Italian duo of Alex Insam and Giovanni Bresadola defended themselves well, passing the first round with ease. The Italian pair also made it through the second round, which reduced the number of competing teams from 12 to 8, leaving Norway, France, Finland and Turkey behind.
The final round determined the final positions: with a super-jump ‘Kobayashi-style’, the Japanese champion, who is more accustomed than ever to breathtaking performances, leapt 141 metres on the HS143. However, the Japanese pair had to give way to the Polish one. With a team performance of 786.6 point in total, Kamil Stoch and Dawid Kubacki won, ahead of the Japanese duo, while a rampant Slovenia completed the podium.
