The beautiful crowd that flocked to Via Nazionale in Ziano does justice to the efforts that the many volunteers have been making for weeks now.
The senior men's event was very balanced, with at least five countries that could have taken the gold medal on the eve. Once again, it was Raimo Vigants (LAT), the 15-kilometre world champion and “almost” crystal globe winner, who came out on top and decided the race. After the first few rounds Latvia, Italy, Sweden and Norway were all in the leading group. The difference started to make itself starting on the last lap of the first fractionists, with Dellagiacoma (ITA) giving way to Tanel hooked up with Latvia's Lauris Koparkalejs, who gave way to his “captain” Vigants, and Sweden (Fransson-Karlsson). On the last climb, Tanel tried to break away from the Latvian, but Vigants took advantage of the wind that slowed Tanel, who practically launched the sprint to his rival. Sweden is third instead. As for the senior women, for the other athletes today, keeping up with Sweden (Stenman-Sömskar) and Norway (Groetting-Nitteberg) was prohibitive. The athletes from the two Scandinavian countries showed they had more, in all moments of the race, especially thanks to the virtually undefeated (in Team Sprints) Linn Sömskar, world champion in the 15 km and winner of the crystal ball. Bronze for Italy.
Sweden repeats itself in the junior races, both in the women and men categories. Clear superiority of the Swedish team formed by Johanna Holmberg and Mira Goeransson despite the great effort of the German Sarah Hofmann and Luisa Dahlke (silver) and of the Italian team of Anna Morandini and the newly crowned 10 km World Champion Anna Maria Ghiddi, bronze.
Among the junior men, there was a fight until the last metres between the Swedish Jonatan Lindberg and Ville Jutterdal and the Italians Tommaso Tozzi and Carlo Cantaloni, which ended in favour of the Scandinavians, with the third place going to Ukraine.
The Rollerski World Championships will end tomorrow with the iconic ascent of the Alpe Cermis!
