A shining Ziano di Fiemme, kissed by the sun, welcomed the second day of Roller-skiing at the FIS Nordic Summer Festival in the valley in Trentino.
The experienced organising committee Nordic Ski Val di Fiemme guaranteed once again a beautiful day of sport with the Mixed Team Sprint competitions, which entertained the many spectators at the finish line of Nazionale street and along the ‘urban’ course of Ziano di Fiemme. The large turnout of the public made a splendid sunny day even more beautiful, with the six 2.5 km laps being tackled alternately first by women, then by men.
Great teamwork for the Italian pairs in the senior race. After the first two laps, undetermined and still in group, with Italy I and Italy II leading at the first change, in the third one, Ghiddi and Boccardi decided to get serious. The two pulled away from the group, taking the lead at the end of the third lap with a few seconds' advantage over Latvia I, 7 seconds over FIS III, a team composed of Ekenberg (SWE) and Lynch (USA), and as much as 11 seconds over Norway I. The aforementioned teams were unable to catch up, also because of a great collaboration between Tommaso Dellagiacoma and Riccardo Lorenzo Masiero, who increased the gap with the chasing trio (which was closing in) to 15 seconds. It was then just a matter of routine for Ghiddi and Boccardi, who nevertheless gave their all until the very last metre to allow their respective teammates to manage the last lap in the best possible way and prepare for the final sprint. The latter was truly spectacular, with Dellagiacoma trying to anticipate the timing on the Nazionale street straight, knowing the skills of his rival and teammate, but there was nothing to do: Masiero won and he immediately ran to embrace Boccardi in celebration. In short, it was an all-round success for TD Sbabo's national team. The surprise race for the podium saw the Swedish-American crew FIS III Ekenberg-Lynch win the sprint for third place over Norway I, composed of Kjosavik-Botterud.
Great result also in the junior race for Italy, with Maria Invernizzi and Stefano Epis ranking third after a solid performance. The competition was decided in the women’s second leg, where Emilie Ruud Lia and Johanna Holmberg pulled away from the group that had remained compact for the first 5 km despite some problems experienced by Sweden, which broke a pole but did not pay the price. Ville Jutterdal then dispelled all doubts with a great show of strength on the final climb near the headquarters of “Radio Fiemme”, which leads into the final straight and the crowds on Via Nazionale. Norway I of Lia-Hansen had to settle for second place.
The Nordic skiing valley, tomorrow, will host the last competitions of the World Cup 2025, the mass start. Eagerly awaited is the men’s race, scheduled for 2 pm, which will crown the winner of the crystal globe.
Will it be the Italian Matteo Tanel or the Latvian Raimo Vigants? Italians are on the right track today...
